If you don’t see an active bill in your state, and you’ve messaged the Facebook page in your state, take the following steps to introduce the bill in your state:
  1. Call your own state legislators and ask aides if the legislator will introduce the Healthy Workplace Bill addressing workplace bullying without regard to protected class status. Use this bill language as a template: https://malegislature.gov/Bills/191/SD1355.
  2. If your legislators won’t introduce it, call other state legislators, starting first with state senators in liberal districts, women or minority legislators who might be more likely to have a personal connection to workplace abuse, and/or legislators who have a track record of introducing pro-labor bills.
  3. Once you have a lead sponsor to introduce the bill and you’re waiting for a bill number, you can setup your communication tools: a website, social media accounts, an email account in a program like Mailchimp, and an optional online petition that will allow you to collect supporter data and email everyone at once). Resources

Consider using these resources to collect supporter data so you can reach out them again in the legislative process:

Social media. Using a Facebook page (rather than a group), Twitter, and LinkedIn, you can broadcast information out to supporters and find contacts who will help spread the word.

Email program. Using a program like Mailchimp, you can blast alerts out to supporters.

Petition. The benefit of petitions is encouraging a simple action, and you can blast messages out to petition signers.

Blog. A blog allows you to explain situations in a more in-depth manner than other options provide. You can also link the blog directly to Facebook and Twitter so your posts automatically appear on them.

Website. It’s where you put it all together. Allow supporters to understand more about workplace abuse, your state’s efforts, and where to find these communication tools.

Once you get going, you can join our network of people who’ve introduced the bill as well as mental health professionals, speakers, and others who fight to end workplace abuse. We’ll share strategies and resources so we can make severe workplace abuse illegal once and for all.

End Workplace Abuse strives to protect and promote workers’ right to psychological wellness – critical to physical health, by advocating for the elimination of abusive behaviors (bullying, mobbing, and harassment) from the American workplace. We achieve our mission by organizing and leading a collective movement advocating for psychological safety at work. We lobby for protective legislation and policies, raise public awareness about psychological harm at work, build leaders who campaign for abuse-free workplaces, and collaborate with other organizations advancing workers’ rights. Because bias and prejudice are often an integral part of workplace abuse, we advocate for protections against discrimination.
