TARGETED IN THE MEDICAL FIELD

“I worked at an orthodontic group, initially hired as a patient accounts representative. Over time, I was promoted to team lead in finance, later transitioned to the administrative team, and completed my MBA. After briefly leaving for another opportunity, I returned to the organization but was unexpectedly terminated.

Unbeknownst to many of us, the CEO and a business consultant had been planning an organizational restructuring behind closed doors, only involving a select few. When the changes were revealed, those of us excluded from the process were told our roles were shifting. The new structure required us to do a broader scope of work with a tight and unrealistic training deadline, no additional pay, and poor communication around logistics and safety.

I raised concerns about safety protocols, especially after loud construction had caused damage to my hearing and a fire alarm went off in the building without our team being informed. We had never received safety or HIPAA training, nor were we given fire escape or active shooter procedures. I asked for clarity, training, and reasonable changes. Instead, I was told I was “no longer a good fit” and was fired without any prior warnings or performance concerns.

They abruptly ended my healthcare benefits, offered only a small severance, and were unhelpful when I reached out for clarification about next steps. Since then, I’ve struggled emotionally, mentally, and financially. I miss the friends I had at work and feel deeply betrayed by leadership — especially the CEO, who outwardly promotes wellness and a positive image but allowed this to happen.

I asked for clarity, training, and reasonable changes. Instead, I was told I was “no longer a good fit” and was fired without any prior warnings or performance concerns.

I’m speaking up now because I believe workplace bullying legislation must be passed. Employers should not be allowed to silence, ignore, or discard employees who are advocating for safety and fairness. Leaders must be held accountable for the impact of their actions.”
