Legal help
If you’re dealing with workplace abuse, retaliation, or coercive management, legal support may help you understand your options.
End Workplace Abuse does not provide legal advice or operate a referral service.
But we’ve compiled trusted directories and resources to help you find an attorney if you choose to pursue one.
Before reaching out to an attorney, it helps to know:
Not all workplace harm is illegal.
Many abusive situations fall outside current laws unless tied to discrimination, retaliation, or other specific claims.
That doesn’t mean your experience isn’t real — it means the legal system has limits and lawyers can get creative.
An attorney can help you understand:
- Whether your situation may be actionable
- What risks you may face
- How to protect yourself moving forward

If your workplace abuse involves illegal practices (e.g., fraud, safety violations), you may be protected under whistleblower laws. Consult with an attorney about these protections.
State & Local Bar AssociationS
You can also search your state or local bar association’s lawyer referral service. These services are broad and not specific to employee-side workplace cases. You may be referred to attorneys who represent employers or who do not have experience with workplace abuse or retaliation patterns.
If you use these services, confirm that the attorney:
Represents employees (not employers)
Has experience with workplace rights or retaliation
Consider the percentage of business devoted to employee side work, whether they take contingency cases, or are they willing to do limited rep agreements.
Look for:
- Employment law
- Labor & employment
- Civil rights
- Retaliation or whistleblower claims
- Disability or accommodation issues
How to Prepare
Most attorneys offer short consultations. To make the most of that time, prepare:
- A brief timeline of events (you can use our Workplace Abuse Ally for help)
- Key documents (emails, write-ups, reviews, messages)
- Notes on reporting, retaliation, leave, or termination
- Names of decision-makers or witnesses
- Your top 2–3 questions
When a Lawyer May HelP
Legal support may be especially useful if your situation involves:
- Retaliation after reporting misconduct
- Discrimination tied to a protected characteristic
- Disability accommodation or medical leave issues
- Wage or contract violations
- Whistleblower protections
- Constructive discharge or forced exit
The Department of Labor (DOL) can help you understand federal labor laws protecting your rights to fair, safe, and healthy working conditions. Call 1-866-4-USA-DOL (1-866-487-2365) or visit their website for more information.
